Hi Anja - Great lesson. It makes me want to learn HTML. I did one class of C++ programming in college, but didn't stick with it. I wish I did! Maybe after I finish all of these ELL courses I can try to take some HTML courses :)
I love children's books! I teach high school and I love it, but I'm always jealous of elementary school teachers because they get to read such adorable books with students. I love your lesson, and that's really cute about your student calling out the dust bunny under your desk.
I love this project! It's so gross to actually see how much sugar is in different drinks. That poster board is enough to get me to stick to water! Thanks for sharing.
I taught a lesson that went really well today. I taught it after writing a lesson plan for the other ELL course I'm taking (Foundations & Methods of Content Instruction).
1. AP Calculus AB
This lesson teaches students to calculate the volume of solids by plane slicing. It's a difficult concept to teach because students have trouble visualizing the solids that are formed by rotating a function around a line. Over the weekend, I required students to pre-read the notes and watch a short video on Khan Academy. I wanted students to have idea of the objectives before class so that the 3-D visualization wouldn't seem so brand new to them. In my lesson, I created 3-D drawings, used Geometer Sketchpad to record videos of solids being created, and brought in a watermelon to demonstrate slicing a solid into disks! I also brought in those 3-D paper party favors to demonstrate the concept of creating a solid from rotation. You can see images of all of these items below.
After students understood the concept, we talked about how to use a definite integral (previously learned) to find the volume. Students also loved eating the watermelon after I was done with the demonstration.
2. This lesson was great for ELL students because of the variety of visuals I provided. I also required students to preview the material which gives ELL students an opportunity to preview vocabulary and watch an example before class starts.
3. I wish I did some sort of Exit Ticket at the end of class. I think that is one thing that I would do differently the next time I teach this. Students have a written quiz on Wednesday that will incorporate this material and it will later appear on the chapter test.
